Rune Reading
Magic and prophetic, the Runes are part of the cultural tradition of the Vikings and are an ancient code of messages, derived from figures formed from the junction of small pieces of wood. Runes were used in three different ways: as an oracle, to convey written messages and as shamanic knowledge.
According to Nordic mythology, the Runes were found by Odin, the greatest of the Scandinavian Gods, who spread them among his people as symbols of wisdom and knowledge of all the mysteries of Gods and men. The word Rune means secret and was used to indicate a mysterious dream or a hidden doctrine. Some peoples of the European continent, before learning the Roman characters, to communicate with each other used the so-called glyphs, which comprised the alphabetical script Futhark, which gave rise to the Runes. Since their appearance, the Runes have acquired a ritualistic function in divination and magic. All aspects of the daily life of the Scandinavian peoples, from the simplest to the most sacred, were governed by the masters of the Runes. The symbols were engraved on amulets, cups, swords, sills and ships, evoking the divine forces that provided protection and assistance. These peoples believed that their magical power would guarantee them an abundance of crops, a favorable climate and the cure of diseases. For five centuries, in the United Kingdom the runic alphabet consisting of 33 letters was used, and in England there are still inscriptions on stones with these characters. The oldest of these is a small safe made of whale bones, from 700 A.D. The expansion of Christianity to the West stopped the construction of monuments dedicated to Scandinavian goddesses, and the runes ended up being banned and forgotten over more than 300 years. But this oracular tradition has not been lost in time, having been reborn as one of the most sought-after oracles in the West.
